MATCH REVIEW- FINAL COAST LEAGUE - SC PIRATES v TUM

The South Coast Pirates rugby team from Ukunda/Diani, Kwale County, were crowned Coast League Champions on Saturday 21st of February following a very tight match in the season's final game against Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) in front of 450 or more supporters.

This was the climax to an exciting season in which the Pirates finished top of the league in only their second season in the league.

TUM brought a very strong team to Ukunda and took the lead in the first half from a penalty. They doubled their lead midway through the second half to make it 6 nil.

The Pirates "never say die" attitude kept driving them on and they had a much better second have.

The pressure on TUM was maintained until Pirates made the vital breakthrough in the dying minutes when they scored a try making the score 5:6.

The tension throughout the packed stadium was palpable as the conversion was taken. A perfect kick made the score 7:6 to scenes of joy both on and off the pitch.

The final whistle came a few minutes later and mass celebrations were in order.

The KRU Champions cup was awarded by The Pirates chairman George Barbour.

This victory takes the Pirates into the national playoffs for the first time competing for a place in the Kenya Cup.

A home tie against the Bungoma Sharks awaits on Saturday 28th February when another bumper crowd is expected to turn up at the Show Ground.
