MATCH REVIEW

KENYA CUP PLAY OFFS QUARTER FINALS

SC PIRATES - BUNGOMA SHARKS (Western)

28/2/15

The pitch was dry and dusty, the weather hot with the Kuzi blowing consistently North to South, favouring each team for one half. The South Coast Pirates, the Coastal Champions, were the first to play with the wind. They exercised good control at the breakdown, recycling the ball well and the defence was solid. Their set pieces were weak which was a feature of the afternoon. The Sharks strength lay in their back line with solid runners out wide. A few passes off target perhaps saved the Pirates going down early on in the game but that is also due to the pressure the Pirates backs put on their opposite numbers.

With a crowd of over 500 egging on the homeside, the Pirates used the wind well and pinned the Sharks back in their own half for large parts of the first half. Losing set pieces, the lineouts and scrums, meant they lost attacking platforms and the Sharks were able to clear their lines. A key point in the game came after such a clearance kick that was fielded by Pirates Captain Marcos Casmil. The electric full back was adjudged to have committed a foul when carrying the ball into the oncoming defender and was sent to the bin for ten. The Pirates did well not to concede with their one man disadvantage, but with a man down were unable to take full advantage of the strong wind. It was 0-0 at the break.

The second half began much like the first. Intense competition at the breakdown, fierce tackling all around. It was a true cup tie with both teams giving it all. The Sharks had their turn with the wind at their backs. They continued to use their wide backs as the focus for their attack thought the Number 8 carried well from the back of the scrum to set up the platforms. After a lot of pressure the outside backs combined yet again and this time got over the line for the Sharks, Issa Hidriss bagging the five points. The subsequent conversion was missed. The Sharks, perhaps the technically better side were able to hold out for the remaining quarter. It was a tense game of rugby between two of Kenya’s newest clubs. The better technical side perhaps edged it on the day but the Pirates showed a lot of courage and their potential to become a name in Kenyan Rugby.

Training sessions

Every Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30PM

at St Joseph - Ukunda

Special sessions organized Fridays' preceding a match.

The Club also meets on Sundays for some Beach Touch Rugby at

Forty Thieves Beach Bar.

The Focus of the training sessions is both on individual skills and on team work. It is expected that the players conduct their own aerobic fitness and strengthening outside of training times.

Ahead of matches and tournaments training numbers are high. The schoolboys who attend boarding schools up country swell the Pirates ranks during the holiday season.

With additional funding, the Pirates hope to make a deal with the Showground Gym in order to begin a weights programs.
